ThomasNATION Reviews - Gordon and Rebecca, Coming Through!
November 07, 2020
When Rebecca first arrived on the Island Of Sodor from the mainland to help Gordon with the express as well making the Steam Team complete again after Henry decided to move to Vicarstown to be nearer to his work, Gordon was still upset about his first friends on the railway moving away only to be made worse by the fact that his new partner for the express kept getting everywhere too early because she didn't want to be known as a 'slow coach'...but when Rebecca made him feel good about himself in front of his brother Flying Scotsman, Gordon soon changed his ways and now he and Rebecca are the best of friends as they carry passengers from Knapford to Vicarstown on their express runs yet one can only wonder which of the two engines that the passengers seem to prefer more over the other. It's time to find out, let's go go go on a big adventure and make way for the express 'cause it's 'Gordon And Rebecca, Coming Through'!
GORDON AND REBECCA, COMING THROUGH: Gordon and Rebecca do the same work, but they go about it differently...when Rebecca tries to be more like Gordon, it doesn't go well for Gordon!

PROS:
When all that we had to work off of was a plot synopsis for the episode, many were assuming that this was just gonna be a rehash of Season 8's 'As Good As Gordon' where Emily got her chance to take the express and tried to do as good a job as Gordon even if that meant trying to copy his mannerisms and losing patience with her friends thus many of us were concerned that they were gonna give Rebecca the same treatment and make her act all high and mighty around the other engines; and while the story for this episode kinda felt like 'As Good As Gordon' at first which may turn some fans off nor does it go the full mile in its story potential like many of us were expecting when it comes to Rebecca trying to be more like Gordon when on her express runs when she was actually going about herself and dealing with it in her own way, sometimes a bit of simplicity is all you need to make a lasting impact since this episode is thankfully different than what many were expecting from a bygone era of the series and that largely comes from the bond between Gordon and Rebecca, whether it be Gordon offering what he considers are wise words for Rebecca about pulling the express since she is still relatively new to the railway and still has some learning to do such as blasting your whistle to get attention when other engines are running later or when Rebecca teaches Gordon after he has a crash that thankfully wasn't over-the-top cartoony about how not everyone is the same when it comes to doing the same jobs.
It's honestly great to see the way that the characters are portrayed in the series is as solid as it has ever been especially when they can both learn something from each other while still maintaining their existing personalities that make them memorable to begin with, and they play off each other really well.
CONS:
Again, the story beats feel a little similar to As Good As Gordon, though not so much that it becomes blatant.

It may look like a rehash on the outside, but it's what's on the inside that really counts...while 'Gordon And Rebecca, Coming Through!' may come off as a rehash of Season 8's 'As Good As Gordon' for some people and while it may not take full advantage of its plot-line like many were expecting it to be, the heartwarming bond between the characters especially among Gordon and Rebecca themselves as they learn that not everyone does the same things with their jobs help it to go full steam ahead in keeping the twenty-fourth season on the right track towards success and that is why it earns a rating of a 4.5 out of 5.
Final Score: 4.5/5
