Thomas and Skarloey's Grand World Tour: ThomasNATION Fanstory [Part 1]

April 16, 2021

It was a busy day up at the Blue Mountain Quarry. Slate was moving up and down the lines and machines, and all the narrow gauge engines were hard at work to make sure they got to their destination on time, except for Skarloey. He, Rheneas, Rusty and Luke were on a break, and were having fun telling each other some fun stories. Rheneas was just finishing his.
ā€œ...and then, I was dashing down the old mountain line at full speed!ā€ Rheneas told his friends. ā€œI was Rheneas the Roller Coaster!ā€
ā€œWow!ā€ Luke cried out in awe. ā€œHow did you stop at such a high speed?ā€
ā€œIt took a while, but I eventually slowed down at the station.ā€ Rheneas responded.
ā€œThatā€™s a great story, Rheneas,ā€ Skarloey said, ā€œbut wait until you hear this one!ā€
Then, Thomas pulled up to the turntable.
ā€œHi, Thomas!ā€ Luke called out to his friend.
ā€œHey, Luke,ā€ said Thomas, ā€œdonā€™t mind me, Iā€™m just here to take some slate up to the docks.ā€
ā€œOh, youā€™re loadā€™s over next to Owen.ā€ said Rusty.
Thomas pulled over to Owenā€™s platform, where he was approached by a workman.
ā€œThomas, I got a message from the Dock Manager,ā€ the workman said with a frown. ā€œyour ship to Brazil isnā€™t coming.ā€
ā€œOh, noā€¦ā€ Thomas gasped. ā€œWhat do I do now?ā€
ā€œYou can try the harbor in Shanghai,ā€ the workman said, ā€œbut there isnā€™t any ships coming in for another two weeks, so youā€™ll have to travel by rail.ā€
ā€œWell, thatā€™s not an issue.ā€ Thomas smiled. ā€œIā€™ll head off tomorrow afternoon.ā€
Back at the turntable, the narrow gauge engines were listening to Thomas and the workmanā€™s conversation. Luke gasped with glee.
ā€œDid you all hear that?ā€ he asked. ā€œThomas is going to China! And Brazil!ā€
ā€œWow,ā€ Skarloey smiled. ā€œI didnā€™t think he had actually done it! You know, Iā€™ve dreamt of travelling the globe myself.ā€
ā€œYou? Go round the world?ā€ Rheneas laughed. ā€œIā€™d like to see that!ā€
As Thomas pulled out of the platform, Luke approached him at a junction.
ā€œAre you really going around the world, Thomas?ā€ he asked.
ā€œYeah, Iā€™m going to help out on the Brazilian railway for a week.ā€ Thomas responded. ā€œBut first, I need to go to Shanghai.ā€
ā€œHey, Thomas!ā€ Rheneas called out. ā€œSkarloey wanted to see the world too!ā€
ā€œReally?ā€
Skarloey chuckled softly. ā€œIā€™ve had one or two thoughts about it, but it does seem like quite the adventure.ā€
ā€œWellā€¦ā€ Thomas pondered. ā€œif you want, I could talk to Mr. Percival and ask if you can come with.ā€
ā€œWhat?!ā€ the narrow gauge engines cried out.
ā€œI mean, only if itā€™s okay.ā€ Thomas said. ā€œI wonā€™t take him with me if he says no.ā€
ā€œWellā€¦ā€ Skarloey pondered. ā€œweā€™ll have to see what Mr. Percival says. Heā€™ll likely say no, however.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s a chance Iā€™m willing to take!ā€ Thomas exclaimed. And with that, he left, away to go talk to Mr. Percival.

That evening, Skarloey was getting prepared to head back to the depot, when Mr. Percival rolled up on his bicycle.
ā€œUh, Skarloey?ā€ Mr. Percival asked. ā€œI need to speak with you.ā€
ā€œOh,ā€ said Skarloey. ā€œis this about Thomas?ā€
ā€œYes, indeed.ā€ Mr. Percival responded. ā€œHe told me about how he wanted to bring you along on his little world tour. And I must sayā€¦ā€
Skarloey was ready for Mr. Percival to say no. But thenā€¦
ā€œ...I think itā€™s a splendid idea!ā€
ā€œWait, really?ā€
ā€œYes,ā€ Mr. Percival said with a grin. ā€œI was initially skeptical of Thomasā€™ plan to travel the world back then, but when he proved it was possible, I thought to myself. What if one of my engines went around the world? So, where are you and Thomas headed?ā€
ā€œWell, first we need to go to Shanghai,ā€ Skarloey responded. ā€œbut our final destination is somewhere in Brazil.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s stupendous, Skarloey.ā€ said Mr. Percival. ā€œI believe that has a small narrow-gauge railway running through the Amazon. So, what do you say? Are you ready to travel the world?ā€
ā€œWellā€¦ā€ Skarloey thought to himself. He considered it for a little while, but finally came to a conclusion. ā€œā€¦okay. Iā€™ll do it!ā€
ā€œGreat!ā€ Mr. Percival said. ā€œI recommend staying at the wharf tonight. Colin can load you onto a flatbed for Thomas to collect.ā€
ā€œThank you, sir.ā€ Skarloey said as he left for the wharf.

The next morning, Skarloey woke up on a flatbed. He was ready to be able to explore the world. Then, Thomas arrived, ready to take Skarloey with him.
ā€œOoh, hello, Thomas!ā€ Skarloey called out. ā€œIsnā€™t it a lovely morning to travel?ā€
ā€œIt certainly is, Skarloey,ā€ Thomas responded. ā€œand if we play our cards right, we should be in Shanghai in about four days.ā€
ā€œOoh, thatā€™s quite a long journey,ā€ Skarloey said. ā€œcanā€™t we just catch a ship to China?ā€
ā€œOne doesnā€™t come in until next week,ā€ Thomas replied. ā€œgoing by rail is our best option at the moment.ā€
ā€œWell, Iā€™ll take what I can get.ā€ said Skarloey, excitedly. ā€œLetā€™s get puffing, Thomas! Adventure awaits!ā€
ā€œOkay,ā€ said Thomas, ā€œbut I think we should stop by Crovanā€™s Gate first.ā€
ā€œOh, very well,ā€ Skarloey chuckled.

Thomas and Skarloey pulled into Crovanā€™s Gate, to reveal all the narrow gauge engines and Mr. Percival waiting there.
ā€œSurprise!ā€ the narrow gauge engines cried.
Skarloey was taken entirely by surprised. ā€œOh my! Whatā€™s all this?ā€
ā€œWe decided to put this together to say goodbye before your big adventure.ā€ said Peter Sam.
ā€œThank you all,ā€ Skarloey said, ā€œbut I do have one last question. While Iā€™m away, whoā€™s going to look after my work?ā€
ā€œWell, Skarloey,ā€ answered Mr. Percival. ā€œIā€™ve arranged for Luke to fill in during your absence.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s fine by me.ā€ said Skarloey.
ā€œI just donā€™t get why youā€™d want to go away halfway across the world!ā€ grumbled Duncan. ā€œI mean, the world isnā€™t just some big railway worth abandoning your friends over!ā€
ā€œDuncan, trust me.ā€ Skarloey reassured his friend. ā€œAs soon as Iā€™m done over in Brazil, Iā€™ll be coming straight back!ā€
ā€œHe knows that,ā€ Sir Handel chimed in. ā€œheā€™s only upset because heā€™s really going to miss you.ā€
Rheneas chuckled. ā€œDuncan, you big softie!ā€
As Rheneas laughed at Duncan, Thomas noticed the clock. It read 11:49.
ā€œCinders and ashes!ā€ Thomas cried. ā€œSkarloey, weā€™ve got to go! If we leave now, we could reach Germany by sundown.ā€
ā€œOh, right on, Thomas.ā€ Skarloey chirped as he and Thomas disembarked. ā€œGoodbye!ā€

Before long, Thomas and Skarloey had left Sodor and were travelling across the Mainland. Skarloey was looking around, enjoying the journey as they approached a canal.
ā€œI say, Thomas, I never realised the Mainland was so beautiful.ā€ Skarloey said in awe.
ā€œTrust me, Skarloey, the best is yet to come!ā€ Thomas assured his small friend. Just then, a boat dropped onto the tracks.
ā€œHALT!ā€ a familiar voice bellowed.
ā€œOh, noā€¦ā€ Thomas sighed.
ā€œHold on,ā€ the voice said to himself. Then, a hook came down and picked up Thomas!
ā€œWhoa!ā€ Thomas screamed.
ā€œThomas!ā€ cried Skarloey.
The hook lifted Thomas up to reveal his old friend Beresford! ā€œIt is! Thomas, my old friend from the island of Sodor! How are you, my good friend, eh?ā€
ā€œUh, not too bad, Beresford.ā€ Thomas muttered. "I've just been hanging about."
ā€œThomas?ā€ called out Skarloey. ā€œWho is this crane? And why is he dangling you around?ā€
ā€œOh, Skarloey, this is my friend Beresford.ā€ said Thomas. ā€œBeresford, this is Skarloey.ā€
ā€œHeā€™s a little small, isnā€™t he?ā€ asked Beresford.
ā€œThatā€™s because heā€™s narrow gauge.ā€ Thomas explained. ā€œNow, can you please put me down? I need to go on a trip to Shanghai.ā€
ā€œOh, youā€™re pulling my hook!ā€ chuckled Beresford. ā€œAnd next week, Iā€™ll be on a rocket ship to the planet Venus, eh?ā€
ā€œNo, heā€™s being serious, Beresford.ā€ Skarloey reassured the crane. ā€œKindly put him down.ā€
Beresford obliged, placing Thomas back onto the rails. ā€œI suppose you chaps will need directions to the English Channel Tunnel?ā€
ā€œThe English Channel Tunnel?ā€ asked Thomas.
ā€œItā€™s a tunnel leading from Strait of Dover in the south all the way to France!ā€
ā€œFrance?ā€ Skarloey gasped. ā€œThatā€™s not anywhere near China.ā€
ā€œI never said this would be a short trip.ā€ protested Thomas. ā€œBut yes, we would like some directions.ā€
ā€œJust go straight ahead, make a right at the junction and youā€™ll hit Strait of Dover in no time at all!ā€
ā€œGreat! Thanks, Beresford!ā€ Thomas said as he left with Skarloey.
ā€œNice to meet you, Beresford!ā€ Skarloey called out.

Thomas was right. This was not at all a short trip. Thomas and Skarloeyā€™s path took them country to country, day after day, night after night. But after six long days of travelling, they had finally reached Shanghai Harbor.
ā€œFinally, we made it!ā€ Thomas sighed in relief. ā€œYou really have it lucky, Skarloey. You donā€™t have to puff so hard non-stop for six days.ā€
ā€œThat is true,ā€ Skarloey claimed, ā€œbut now weā€™ve finally made it.ā€
Thomas soon noticed his old friend, Yong Bao, waiting for a delivery. ā€œYong Bao!ā€
ā€œOh, ni hao, Thomas!ā€ said Yong Bao as the duo approached him. ā€œI wasn't expecting you to visit. What are you doing here?ā€
ā€œWell, we need to catch a ship to Brazil,ā€ said Skarloey. ā€œdo you suppose you could help us out?ā€
ā€œAbsolutelyā€¦uhā€¦Iā€™m sorry, I didnā€™t catch your name.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s Skarloey.ā€ Thomas explained. ā€œSo, uh, whereā€™s this ship to Brazil?ā€
ā€œRight over there,ā€ Yong Bao gestured over to a ship docked at the harbor. ā€œThat ship should take you straight to Rio de Janeiro.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s perfect!ā€ Thomas exclaimed. ā€œThanks, Yong Bao!ā€
ā€œMy pleasure, Thomas!ā€ Yong Bao called out, as Thomas was loaded onto the ship.
ā€œAhā€¦ā€ Thomas sighed. ā€œitā€™s nice to finally be able to relax my wheelsā€¦ā€
ā€œYes, but we shouldnā€™t get used to it, you know,ā€ Skarloey said as he was loaded onto the ship. ā€œAs I always say, if your wheels arenā€™t whirring, you arenā€™t being a really useful engine.ā€
ā€œWell, we have plenty of chances to be really useful over in Rio,ā€ Thomas said, cheerfully. ā€œReady to see the world, Skarloey?ā€
ā€œI am, Thomas. I truly am.ā€ said Skarloey.
And soon, the ship left, en route for Rio de Janeiro.

To be continued.
