Perfect Storm - ThomasNATION Fanstory

November 25, 2023

It was a really rough day on Sodor. A powerful storm thundered through the island, causing a slew of delays thanks to the rain and the fog. However, not every job was out aside. Despite everything, they still had a railway to run, which Sir Topham Hatt made crystal clear at Knapford.
"Alright, listen up, everybody," announced Sir Topham Hatt, "I know we're in the midst of a storm, but we still need to sort everyone's jobs for the day. To begin, Percy - no change for you, you're still in charge of the mail train."
"No problem, sir." chirped Percy.
"As for you, Emily," continued Sir Topham Hatt, "you and Rocky will be clearing away fallen branches from the tracks."
"Easy," smirked Emily. "you can count on us."
"And Nia," concluded Sir Topham Hatt, "I need you to escort a group of giraffes from the Animal Park to a sanctuary in Vicarstown."
"Yes, sir!" smiled Nia. "I'll get on it straight away."
Nia immediately started heading to the Animal Park, until Sir Topham Hatt stopped her again.
"Hold it right there, Nia," said Sir Topham Hatt, "the fog is making the tracks quite hard to see, so I'm assigning you a banker engine."
"Who?"
Just then, a familiar whistle blared through the yard. Nia's banker engine was none other than Charlie! "Right here, sir!"
"Ah, great to see you, Charlie!" smiled Sir Topham Hatt. "Now, I'm certain you've met Nia?"
"Oh, me and Charlie are well acquainted, sir," chuckled Nia. "I think this is gonna go quite well!"

Nia and Charlie collected the giraffes from the Animal Park and were en route to Vicarstown. Along the way, Charlie would entertain Nia with his jokes and puns while Nia would tell Charlie about her journeys across the world with Thomas. Along the way, Nia and Charlie would keep running over little bumps on the rails that kept exploding.
"Whoa!" laughed Charlie. "What was that?"
"That was a detonator, Charlie," explained Nia, "they let engines know when they're coming up to a signal."
"Really?" Charlie kept chuckling. "They're quite fun!"
"I know, Charlie," said Nia, "but we don't have time. We still need to get these giraffes to that sanctuary."
Charlie rolled his eyes. "That's not very fun at all."
"There's a time and a place for having fun with detonators." Nia sighed. "But this is important. We can play with the detonators when we're done."
Charlie was immensely disappointed, but soon, he got an idea. "I know! Why don't I take the lead of this train for a little while? We can take turns!"
Nia thought for a second. "Okay, I suppose I can trust you with this. You sure you know where to go?"
"Of course, I do!" Charlie chuckled to himself.

Nia and Charlie swapped places and were ready to go. However, unbeknownst to Nia, Charlie didn't care about getting to the sanctuary, all he cared about was playing on the detonators. He took the tracks with the most detonators and was having a grand old time. Nia, on the other hand, had her concerns.
"Are you sure you know where you're going?" called Nia.
"Couldn't be more positive!" laughed Charlie.
Then, there was trouble. Charlie's route had led him and Nia straight to a nearby smelter's yard. Nia was starting to doubt Charlie's sense of direction. As was Charlie, as it would happen.
"Charlie?" asked Nia. "This isn't the way to the sanctuary, is it?"
"Um..." Charlie muttered. "...no?"
    "And right now, we're..."
"In a smelter's yard."
Just then, Nia and Charlie's problems were about to go from bad to worse. The two were greeted by 'Arry and Bert.
"'Ello, steamies..." growled 'Arry.
"Uh...hi?" stammered Charlie. "Don't worry about us, we were just leaving."
"Oh, were ya?" snarled Bert. "Ya only just got 'ere. Stay a while, would ya?"
"No thanks," chuckled Nia as she and Charlie left. "we've gotta get to Vicarstown."
Slowly, but surely, Nia and Charlie had narrowly escaped the smelter's yard. While Charlie was more than relieved, Nia was pretty mad.
"Well..." smiled Charlie. "...at least we're still alive?"
"Just go to the back of the train." sighed Nia. "I don't want you causing us any more trouble because you won't take anything seriously."
After all that, Charlie was nothing but ashamed that his antics caused all this.

Throughout the remainder of the journey, Nia didn't talk to Charlie that much. She was still pretty upset over Charlie messing up the task because he wanted to play on the detonators, because now, they were running late and the giraffes were put in danger. She was so upset that she didn't notice her lamp going out, leading to her going the wrong way.
"Uh, Nia?" called out Charlie. "I don't think this is the right way!"
"I'm sure you know a lot about that." grumbled Nia.
Then, there was more trouble. Nia was headed straight towards Kirk Ronan!
"No, Nia, seriously!" Charlie cried. "You're headed right for a station!"
It was here Nia noticed the danger she was in. She tried applying the brakes, but the rain made the tracks slippery and...
BANG! Nia crashed straight into the station wall. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the station was an absolute wreck.
"Nia! Are you okay?" shouted Charlie.
"Yeah, I'm fine!" shouted Nia back. "Are the giraffes okay?"
"I think so!" yelled Charlie. "Hold on, let me go get help!"
Charlie shunted the giraffes onto a nearby siding and headed off to find Rocky. After a long search, he finally found him at Wellsworth, though he was still being hauled by Emily.
"Emily! Thank goodness!" cried Charlie. "I need to borrow Rocky."
    "Really?" asked Emily. "How come?"
"There's been an accident at Kirk Ronan! Nia's crashed into the station!"
"You're kidding!" gasped Rocky.
    "I wish I was, Rocky."
"Alright, let's get moving!" yelled Rocky. "Lead the way, Charlie!"

Charlie had successfully escorted Emily and Rocky to Kirk Ronan where they quickly cleaned up the mess and helped Nia back onto the rails.
"Thanks, Rocky," smiled Nia. "And thanks to you too, Charlie."
"It's fine, Nia," chuckled Charlie. "and I'm sorry for not taking this more seriously."
"Don't worry about it," laughed Nia, "but now you know better, eh?"
"That's true," smirked Charlie. "Now, let's get to that sanctuary."
Nia and Charlie coupled back up to the giraffes and were en route to the sanctuary. By the time they got to Vicarstown, the storm was finally letting up and the two had finally dropped off the giraffes.
"What a day, huh?" asked Charlie.
"Yeah," smiled Nia, "but at least we're finally all good."
And with that, Nia and Charlie headed off to their sheds for a nice, well deserved break, with Charlie having learned that there are indeed times where he would have to take things seriously.
