ThomasNATION Classic Reviews - Down the Mine

March 01, 2025

Well, here we are. Thomas' 80th anniversary. And what better way to celebrate than reviewing the episode that technically started it all? Yeah, talking about how Down the Mine was originally filmed as the series' pilot is basically general knowledge at this point. Everyone and their grandmother knows about it. But that's not why we're taking a gander at this one. This was chosen for being one of the late Britt Allcroft's favorite episodes. And I'm here to ask "is it worth the hype?" Well, let's begin!
I don't think I need to explain the story of this episode. We all know how it goes. Thomas teases Gordon after his incident with the ditch, but gets his own when he falls down a mine and it's up to Gordon to save him.
I kinda like how instead of the moral being "be careful around danger signs", the moral is instead just "...FAFO". Like, ya don't feel all that bad for Thomas falling into the ditch, you acknowledge he's kinda reaping what he sowed. He brought it on himself for teasing Gordon in the first place. Now, you may think this would make Thomas come across as unlikable, something even the episode kinda acknowledges. But at the same time, the episode understands it's important that he does learn his lesson at the end by not only being embarrassed the same way Gordon was, but also burying the hatchet with the guy. It builds off the events of Off the Rails pretty decently and the scene where they level the playing field is pretty heartwarming.
I know this was among one of the shorter reviews, but honestly, do I even need to explain why this works? It's up there with Thomas Comes to Breakfast as one of the most iconic episodes of Thomas ever. I don't even need to explain why I recommend it because A. you already know how iconic it is, and B. you've already seen it. And with that, I'm more than glad to give it a perfect 5/5.
