ThomasNATION Reviews - Cleo's First Snow

January 23, 2021

Hey all, JF here, and before I begin, let me say, happy new year!

But with that aside, we were introduced to the character of Cleo in mid-2020. I already reviewed her introductory episode, and I thought it was decent enough. It has its cringey moments, but overall, it’s a fine ride, and Cleo herself is an adorable character. But how does she handle the winter? Will her first snow be a magical experience, or should we just wait until it melts? Let’s begin.
The story of the episode is about Ruth showing Cleo about the wondrous and mysterious nature of snow, which she is rather impressed by. However, the little road engine learns of the snow’s finite nature, and sets out to prevent it from melting.
What I love about this episode is that in contrast to the other episodes featuring Cleo or Ruth where the main plotline is really over-the-top and bonkers, this episode just tells a more simple story. It doesn’t do anything big or crazy or even anything inventive, it just has a more laid back tone as it takes us through Cleo’s exploration of winter, which in a season filled with big, over the top stories like the Marvellous Machinery duology, the season really needed.
And once again, Cleo is absolutely adorable. I love her naivety about snow, and the scenes where she tries to save it from melting are pretty wholesome. What I’ll also give credit to is that while I didn’t much care for Ruth as a character in her introductory episodes, she does really work as a mother figure to Cleo.
If I do have to find something to criticize, it’s that while it’s good that the episode takes itself easy, it also does so to a fault. There are times where the pacing can feel a bit too slow, to the point where there is a good amount of filler.
But aside from all that, Cleo’s First Snow isn’t much to write home about, but I will say it’s a pretty cute episode. It’s a nice, laid back time, and probably Cleo’s best episode. If you’re looking for an episode that diverges from the over-the-top themes of Season 24, or if you’re looking for cute Cleo antics, then I recommend you check it out. It’s an okay time, and with that, it gets a big ol’ 3.5/5.
