ThomasNATION Classic Reviews - Daisy
January 08, 2022
As Thomas The Tank Engine himself once said in an interview with ABC News, 'every useful engine has their own story to tell'...and while you will all be hearing my story very soon when the upcoming documentary 'An Unlikely Fandom' is finally released next year, allow me to share with you all how I first got introduced to the little blue tank engine: the year is 1996, I was two years old attending at my cousin's first communion and I came across an ERTL diecast model of Duck The Great Western Engine. At that time of course, I had no idea what Thomas The Tank Engine even was...but there was just something that attracted me so much to this little toy train engine: was it the bright colors? Was it his big smiling face? I couldn't put my finger on it, it was a mystery.
But even if I couldn't figure out what drew me towards this peculiar toy train, I loved this world of Thomas The Tank Engine and its characters so much that I would eventually go on to get my first Wooden Railway circle set as well as my first two videotapes of the original 'Thomas & Friends' television series for Christmas of that same year which were none other than 'Daisy' and 'Percy's Ghostly Trick'...and so to celebrate the episode's thirty-fifth anniversary since its debut across the pond and to also celebrate my twenty-fifth anniversary as a loyal fan of Thomas The Tank Engine, I wanted to do a very special review for you all on this most wonderful time of the year of the very first episode of 'Thomas & Friends' that I ever watched. So without any further delay, let's take a look at 'Daisy'!
DAISY: Daisy The Diesel Railcar comes to help on Thomas' branch line after Thomas' indisposal and causes trouble with rude remarks toward the coaches and refusing to pull a milk tanker.
---
Most people would say that Emily or Lady are the first female engines in the original series, but really it was Daisy since Emily would count as the Island Of Sodor's first steam engine in the series and Lady would've been if she was a recurring character and not in 'Thomas And The Magic Railroad'. In the books, Daisy's face is green from the livery of the DMU Railcars, but in the television series, she has makeup and it does look good as well despite looking really 1980s-esque. One thing about Daisy is that her character in this story is entitled and brattish-sort of like a typical teenage girl like Angelica Pickles from 'Rugrats' and its good message towards people on not being like her: whatever job you are given, you have to do it regardless of how you feel.
But there was one visual error in the episode and that is the fact that Daisy's predicament with the milk tanker took place at Ffarquhar in the Railway Series book 'Branch Line Engines' whereas it takes place at Elsbridge in the episode itself: to me looking back as a longtime fan of Thomas The Tank Engine, it would've been good if they based the station with the Reverend W. Awdry's map of his Ffarquhar layout. But I think you'll know by now that this is a bit of a minor goof since the episode itself is still really good and I do enjoy it as one that I will always cherish for being my official introduction to the 'Thomas & Friends' television series, even if I had to wait until I got the 'Tenders And Turntables' videotape in order to get some context about the accident Thomas had that led to his indisposal. But that won't stop me from giving 'Daisy' a rating of a 4.5 out of 5.
Final Rating: 4.5/5
