ThomasNATION Classic Reviews - Thomas & Bertie

March 19, 2022

Bertie the Bus is friendly and ready to help anyone in need however he can be quite cheeky and can even be boastful about himself especially to Thomas as he's always joking around and teasing him about their races. He can sometimes be quite grumpy as whenever he breaks down or gets stuck, he grumbles about it but he is always however easy-going and cheerful to everyone he sees, and unlike Bulgy, Bertie respects the railways and its engines and serves as one of the many minds keeping the double-decker bus in line.  In keeping with this month's trilogy of racing themed reviews on the Island Of Sodor, it's time that we now look back on the day that Thomas finally met Bertie The Bus for the first time after previously coming to the rescue of his passengers and had the first of many great races to come for the future of the series as we recall a tale from Season 1 that's as classic as you can get: this is the story of 'Thomas & Bertie'!

THOMAS & BERTIE: Thomas meets Bertie the Bus who challenges him to a race.

---
"So although between you and me, they would like to have another race. I don't think they ever will, do you?"
That depends, we would just have to keep on chugging along to find out but really Sir Topham Hatt has got a point: trains driving over the designated speed limit is just as dangerous as cars and buses driving over theirs.  Regardless, this is a fun little episode: for once, we ended up seeing a little friendly competition on Thomas' branch line. As much as Thomas was opposed to the whole idea of Bertie even existing to help him, it turned out by the end that Bertie gave Thomas a literal run for his money.  This was also a great example of the pros and cons of being an engine as opposed to some other types of vehicles: there are things locomotives can do that cars can't or vice versa, acceleration and top speed being just two cases shown here.  They even share similarities when it comes to having to stop at red signals: they may stop for different kinds of crossings, but both of their operators have to apply the brakes.
As for characters, Bertie is our second non-train related character to be introduced so far: he may at first sound somewhat overly brash, but it turns out that he was just looking for some sporty fun with good intentions.  Thomas may not have seen this at first for a viable reason too, but that was verified otherwise when Bertie congratulated him on his win.  It was also nice to know that this little gameplay did not get them both into trouble since they were most likely pushing the limits of transportation laws when it came to safe acceptable speeds and although he wasn't seen for a couple of episodes now, Sir Topham Hatt still makes a verbal cameo just to let the audience know that he's still around and is very well aware of what goes on even when he's not physically there-like I said, Sir Topham Hatt knows all!  Either way, Thomas has developed a friendly rivalry with a new friend and that's completely fine since we don't want too many characters all feeling the same because they're all generic nice especially in regards to the later seasons of the series.
The music and visual aesthetics to the episode are still headstrong, only one new musical tune this time but that's okay since Bertie's theme is a hop-skip-and-a-jump kind of tune and it's definitely one that will always belong to him.  For set pieces, the camera keeps changing location as of late and there's nothing wrong with that: the other unique thing is that the camera is placed a lot higher for certain shots so to reveal the road Bertie travels on because we didn't get this in previous episodes since there was no reason to, but what's cool is that now we see where Bertie travels and how close by his path runs near Thomas'.  Another feel-good story and an absolute classic, it's no wonder why fans love it thus 'Thomas And Bertie' gets a rating of a perfect 5/5.

Final Rating: 5/5
