ThomasNATION Reviews - The Biggest Adventure Club
May 21, 2022
I'm sure you guys all know the story of 'All Engines Go'. Without going into too much detail, the fandom didn't react well to this new storytelling formula, and soon everywhere you went online, you'd see it: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, you name it, they were ticked beyond belief. But now that the fandom's flames of hatred for this controversial reboot seem to have settled down for now and now that some time has passed since the first season wrapped up, are their views still valid? Let's find out as we dive into another episode of the confusing world of 'All Engines Go' with The Biggest Adventure Club.
THE BIGGEST ADVENTURE CLUB: When Thomas finds a treasure map, he creates The Big Adventure Club to seek the treasure and Sandy wants to join. But Thomas says she's too little, so Sandy forms her own club.
Looking into the concept of forming a team to go searching for a strange rock formation in a crystal cave with the help of an old treasure map, it actually does make for an interesting set-up for a 'big adventure' type of story-the kind that you would find in films like Indiana Jones or National Treasure...even if some fans would perceive the disused water tower of forty years as explained by Gordon as a middle finger from Mattel to the fans in regards to the original series which will actually be turning forty in the next couple years. But when you also have to work in Sandy's plotline about proving her worth to her friends in the Big Adventure Club in spite of her size just what little engines can do-see what I did there-that's when the similarities from the original series start to come back in full force again. Yep...just when you thought we were finally done with these diet rehashes of the original series, they come back to bite us on the bunker with this time being a rehash of the Jack And The Pack spin-off episode 'Alfie Has Kittens' as well as oddly enough elements from 'A Dog And Pony Show' from the first season of 'My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic' which isn't necessarily a bad thing since I absolutely loved both of those episodes to the point where they even made my top five of their respective season and series. But I don't know, maybe it's because I'm too used to what came before in Thomas The Tank Engine or if it's because I've seen this particular moral done so many times before in other shows and movies but I honestly got much more enjoyment from those episodes than I did with this.
Does that make 'The Biggest Adventure Club' bad? Not necessarily. While it is a shame that this is another episode that falls victim to story similarities from the original series and even the series which shares a similar art style with, the actually adventure parts themselves are still really really good thus making this one of those "great on paper, crappy in execution" type of ideas just like with how 'Rules Of The Game' from earlier in the season felt like one big toy commercial - heck, Mattel already has plans to make the Crystal Cavern into one of their Push Along sets for the reboot which I'm sure I'll more than likely end up seeing at an Ollie's in the future if they don't sell well. So while it may not be all that memorable as an episode, it still managed to be memorable as a big adventure thus I'm gonna give 'The Biggest Adventure Club' a rating of a 3 out of 5.
Final Rating: 3/5
