Into the Woods - ThomasNATION Fanstory

October 31, 2022

It was the day before Halloween on Sodor, and as the engines got prepared for the trick-or-treating and the parties, the Sodor Construction Crew were still hard at work building a bank building in Suddery. But the crew were still waiting on a supply of stone, and Max and Monty were growing impatient.
ā€œWhere is Thomas?ā€ groaned Max. ā€œHe was supposed to be here two hours ago.ā€
ā€œYeah, itā€™s not like him to laze around on the job.ā€ sighed Monty. ā€œā€¦well, except that one time.ā€
ā€œPatience, lads.ā€ said Jenny Packard. ā€œI just heard from Sir Topham that Thomas is held up in Wellsworth. Right now, we got more dirt for you to take to the dump.ā€
Max groaned. ā€œI hate the dump! Itā€™s always cluttered, and the machines never work, and donā€™t get me started on the smell!ā€
ā€œAgreedā€, replied Monty. ā€œwe ainā€™t goinā€™ there, no way, no how!ā€
ā€œBut you have to put the dirt somewhere.ā€ said Alfie. ā€œI donā€™t think Brenda can move it out the way anymore.ā€
ā€œBesides, ya gotta pitch in one way or another,ā€ Jack added on, ā€œso we can get this bank built quicker.ā€
ā€œFiiiiineā€¦ā€ groaned Max and Monty.
Miss Jenny chuckled. ā€œLoad ā€˜em up, Oliver. You too, Jack.ā€
Oliver and Jack loaded Max and Monty up with dirt and they were on their way. But neither of them wanted to go to the dump.
ā€œThereā€™s gotta be somewhere we can put all this.ā€ thought Monty. ā€œIf I have to endure that dumpā€™s smell, Iā€™m gonna go crazy.ā€
ā€œYeah, Iā€™m with you.ā€ said Max. ā€œBut where are we gonna find somewhere to put all this junk?ā€
ā€œWe need to find somewhere deep in the backside of Sodor, somewhere where theyā€™d never notice a pile of dirt.ā€
ā€œAnd if they do?ā€
ā€œWell, theyā€™d just call it part of the scenery.ā€
Max and Monty thought for a second. They thought of all the hidden areas on the island. Hiroā€™s old hideout. The Ulfstead mines. Even the old quarry. But none of them seemed rightā€¦untilā€¦
ā€œI got it!ā€ cried Max. ā€œWhat if we dump it in the Whistling Woods?ā€
ā€œThe Whistling Woods?ā€ Monty pondered. ā€œI dunno. Itā€™s a little spooky in there.ā€
ā€œSpooky? Come on, Monty, donā€™t tell me you actually buy all those ghost stories.ā€
ā€œYeah, I know, but itā€™s the day before Halloween, and you know how that sorta thing goes.ā€
ā€œBut itā€™s not Halloween yetā€¦is it?ā€
Monty chuckled. He liked what Max was thinking. ā€œI see your point. Alright, youā€™re on. Letā€™s move!ā€

Max and Monty made it into the Whistling Woods. It was starting to get late and theyā€™d been gone from the rest of the Pack for a while, but the two had to find the perfect spot to dump all the dirt. Soon, they found a great area, hidden from the tracks.
ā€œItā€™s beautiful!ā€ Max chuckled evilly. ā€œAnd itā€™s ripe for the dumpinā€™!ā€
ā€œI get to go first!ā€ chirped Monty.
ā€œWhat? No! This was my idea! Iā€™m goinā€™ first!ā€ shouted Max as he barged Monty out of the way.
ā€œHey! No fair!ā€ cried Monty.
ā€œYa snooze, ya lose, brother!ā€ Max laughed as he dumped the dirt and sped off. ā€œMeet ya back there!ā€
As Max left, Monty groaned in anger at his brotherā€™s antics. But soon he dumped his dirt onto the spot and prepared to leave. But then, he heard a strange noise. ā€œroooaaaarrrrggghhhhā€¦ā€
Monty gulped. ā€œHello? Wh-h-hoā€™s t-t-there?ā€
The noise repeated. It was like a loud mechanical whir, blaring through the forest. Monty was almost too scared to move. ā€œH-h-hello?!ā€
The noise continued until Monty was absolutely terrified. He sped out of the woods, screaming for his life.

That night, most of the Pack were tucked away in their sheds, but there was still no sign of Monty.
ā€œWhereā€™s Monty?ā€ asked Oliver. ā€œHe should be back by now.ā€
ā€œItā€™s insane,ā€ said Max, ā€œhe was with me at the wo-ā€œ He stopped when he saw the Pack staring at him. ā€œā€¦uh, dump! He was with me at the dump.ā€
Elsewhere, Alfie had collected the stone from Thomasā€™ train. ā€œWhat was with the holdup, Thomas?ā€
ā€œAh, you know. Broken crossing at Wellsworth.ā€ Thomas explained. ā€œI only had Toby to keep me company, but he kept yammering on about hearing a ghost in the Whistling Woods.ā€
ā€œGhosts? He does know ghosts arenā€™t real, right?ā€
ā€œThatā€™s what me and Henrietta said.ā€ Thomas laughed.
Just then, Monty came racing in, still screaming until he raced into his shed.
ā€œWhoa!ā€ cried Jack. ā€œMonty, whatā€™s wrong?ā€
ā€œI heard aā€¦a g-g-g-g-g-gā€¦ā€
ā€œUhā€¦you heard a grape?ā€ asked Darcy.
ā€œA goat!ā€ shouted Jack.
ā€œA grill?ā€ requested Oliver.
ā€œā€¦g-g-g-ghooost!ā€ cried Monty.
The Pack laughed at Monty. ā€œYou canā€™t be serious, Monty!ā€ laughed Max. ā€œThereā€™s no such thing!ā€
ā€œItā€™s true! I heard it in the Whistling Woods!ā€
The Pack continued laughing, all except Alfie. ā€œNow, hold on. I thought you were at the dump all day.ā€
ā€œWe took the scenic route!ā€ said Max, quickly.
ā€œBut the Whistling Woods isnā€™t anywhere near the dump.ā€ Oliver thought.
ā€œAnyway,ā€ said Alfie as he put the last of the stone down. ā€œletā€™s discuss this more in the morning. For now, we need our sleep.ā€
ā€œAlfieā€™s right,ā€ Jack said. ā€œwe can discuss Max and Monty disregarding their tasks later.ā€
ā€œHey!ā€ said Max and Monty.
ā€œWell, you did.ā€ protested Jack.

The next morning, the worksite was decorated for Halloween, but while the Pack was constructing the bank, Miss Jenny was reprimanding Max and Monty.
ā€œYou two are in a heap of trouble,ā€ Miss Jenny scowled. ā€œyou were specifically told to go straight to the dump, and you couldnā€™t even do that!ā€
ā€œBut, Miss Jennyā€¦ā€ Max and Monty pouted.
ā€œNo buts.ā€ continued Miss Jenny. ā€œWhen all the dirtā€™s piled up at the end of the day, youā€™re both going to the dump. No shortcuts.ā€
ā€œYes, Miss Jennyā€¦ā€ Max and Monty sighed.
As she left, Alfie approached the two. ā€œYā€™know, the two of you canā€™t act like you didnā€™t deserve this, I mean-ā€œ
ā€œCan we focus?ā€ interrupted Monty. ā€œI heard a ghost last night!ā€
ā€œMonty, come on!ā€ Max groaned. ā€œHow many times do I need to say? Thereā€™s no such things as ghosts!ā€
ā€œI dunno, Max,ā€ Darcy chimed in. ā€œI heard Thomas say that Toby heard a ghost in the Whistling Woods as well. There might be a ghost in there.ā€
ā€œCome on, not you too!ā€ sighed Max. ā€œThereā€™s no ghosts in the Woods!ā€
ā€œThen why donā€™t we prove it?ā€ Alfie suggested. ā€œMax, you go get Toby. Weā€™re going to find that ghost!ā€
ā€œWow! What a totally safe and natural idea!ā€ Monty grinned.
ā€œReally?ā€
ā€œNo!ā€ Monty shouted. ā€œWe canā€™t go in there alone! Not with a ghost!ā€
ā€œHey, you arenā€™t alone, brother,ā€ said Max, ā€œya got us!ā€
ā€œNot to mention Toby,ā€ added Alfie.
ā€œWellā€¦if you say so.ā€ sighed Monty. ā€œFine, weā€™ll hunt this one ghost, but letā€™s not make a habit outta this!ā€
ā€œWould we need to?ā€ asked Max.

Max, Monty and Alfie pulled into Maithwaite where Toby and Henrietta were talking to Emily, Rocky and Flynn.
ā€œYou really havenā€™t seen Harold anywhere?ā€ asked Emily.
ā€œHe hasnā€™t come back to base in two days!ā€ whimpered Flynn.
ā€œI canā€™t say I have, guys.ā€ said Toby.
ā€œWeā€™ll let you know if we see him, though.ā€ said Henrietta.
As Emily, Rocky and Flynn left, Max and Monty saw their chance to ask Toby. ā€œPsst! Hey, Toby!ā€
ā€œEh?ā€ asked Toby. ā€œOh. Hi, Max. Monty. Alfie. What are you doing here?ā€
ā€œWe need your help,ā€ said Monty. ā€œyou said you heard a ghost the other day, right?ā€
ā€œYes. I just thought I was hearing things.ā€
ā€œWell, Monty heard the same thing,ā€ chimed in Max, ā€œso I was thinking: we should all go in and find that ghost.ā€
ā€œFind that ghost?ā€ Toby shivered. ā€œNo, I wonā€™t do it! I donā€™t want to be possessed!ā€
ā€œYouā€™ll be fine, Toby,ā€ Max said. ā€œbesides, between you and me, thereā€™s really no ghost in there.ā€
ā€œBut I heard it!ā€
ā€œAre ya sure?ā€
Toby thought for a moment. ā€œHeā€™s got a point there, Toby.ā€ said Henrietta.
ā€œHmmā€¦alright.ā€ Toby sighed. ā€œIf you say so.ā€

The four trekked into the Whistling Woods. It was quietā€¦too quiet. This really concerned Monty and Toby.
ā€œUhā€¦where do you guys think itā€™ll be?ā€ whimpered Monty. ā€œAnd does it eat dump trucks?ā€
ā€œWill you quit worryinā€™?ā€ groaned Max. ā€œLetā€™s just get in here, bust your nonexistent ghost, get out, finish the bank, bada bing, bada boom.ā€
ā€œMax is right.ā€ Alfie replied. ā€œHe said it really weird, but heā€™s right. Chances are, thereā€™s nothing here!ā€
As he spoke, the strange moan blared through the forest. ā€œroooaaaarrrrggghhhhā€¦ā€
ā€œWhat was that?!ā€ Toby whimpered. ā€œWas that the ghost?ā€
ā€œHow do we know that wasnā€™t an owl?ā€ asked Alfie.
The moan grew louder and louder until they approached a small bush. The four didnā€™t know what happened.
ā€œHuh. It stopped.ā€ chuckled Max. ā€œI told you! Thereā€™s no-ā€œ
The moaning grew louder than before, even frightening Max and Alfie.
ā€œMaybe there is a ghost in there!ā€ Alfie cried.
ā€œLetā€™s get outta here!ā€ whimpered Toby.
ā€œNo! We gotta see what this guy looks like!ā€ Monty yelled out. ā€œOne of us has to go in!ā€
ā€œYeah! Max responded. ā€œMonty, go in!ā€
         ā€œWhat, me?! Iā€™m not going in there!ā€
ā€œYou gotta! I donā€™t wanna get possessed!ā€
         ā€œMe neither!ā€
ā€œJust go in there! Iā€™ll make sure the pack remembers your name!ā€
        ā€œOh, real helpful!ā€
ā€œBoth of you!ā€ sighed Alfie. ā€œStop bickering and go in there!ā€
Max and Monty swallowed their pride and slowly trudged in. The moan was growing louder, almost deafening, but Max and Monty braved it andā€¦then they saw it. The source of the moaning. The ghost Monty had heard was none other thanā€¦
ā€œHarold?!ā€ cried Max and Monty.
ā€œMax? Monty?ā€ asked Harold. ā€œWhat are you two doing here?ā€
ā€œWe could ask you the same thing.ā€ chuckled Monty.
ā€œI was rescuing some trapped hikers a couple days ago.ā€ Harold explained. ā€œBut my rotors got branches lodged between them. I tried restarting my blades, but nothingā€™s working!ā€
ā€œWait, so all that moaning and groaning we heard,ā€ asked Toby, ā€œthat was you?ā€
ā€œYeah,ā€ replied Harold. ā€œWhatā€™d you think it was?ā€

Harold was soon rescued by the Sodor Search and Rescue team. The Pack even helped out to clear away the branches. As it happened, Miss Jenny spoke to Max and Monty.
ā€œWell done, lads!ā€ commended Miss Jenny. ā€œI donā€™t think Harold would be freed if it werenā€™t for you lads.ā€
ā€œOh, it was nothing,ā€ boasted Max.
ā€œReally, it was. Iā€™m still not sure how it happened.ā€ said Monty.
ā€œWell, the two of ya would make a mother proud, thatā€™s for sure!ā€ Miss Jenny said as she left.
ā€œNice work, chaps,ā€ chuckled Oliver. ā€œI never thought you two would save the day.ā€
ā€œAnd on Halloween no less.ā€ laughed Jack.
ā€œWell, what can we say?ā€ chuckled Monty.
ā€œItā€™s all part of our plan.ā€ Max bragged.
ā€œPlan? What plan?ā€ argued Monty. ā€œWe found Harold on accident.ā€
And off the two went to finish the bank, arguing away like always, as Toby and Henrietta stayed behind with the rescue team.
ā€œTo thereā€™s really no ghost in here?ā€ Toby asked.
ā€œNope!ā€ chuckled Emily. ā€œYouā€™re all good. Besides, thereā€™s no such thing as ghosts. You know that, right?ā€
ā€œRight. Of course.ā€ Toby said as he puffed away.
ā€œYouā€™re finally over your fears, eh?ā€ asked Henrietta.
ā€œOh, Iā€™m still scared, Henrietta,ā€ chuckled Toby. ā€œBut I at least know thereā€™s nothing in here to be scared about.ā€
