ThomasNATION Reviews - Sir Topham Hatt's Hat

June 01, 2024

If you were to ask any longtime fan of Thomas what their thoughts were on the original television series as a whole, they would more often than not tell you that it's been many years since Sir Topham Hatt first came to Sodor as a railway engineer as he rose quickly in the company being a director at an early age and eventually chairman. His imposing appearance no less than his firm but kindly handling of both engines and staff earned him the affectionate nickname of The Fat Director. Then after nationalization when he was awarded a knighthood for his services to the railway industry, he became Sir Topham Hatt or The Fat Controller depending on which country you read or watch Thomas' adventures in.

Every fan of Thomas young or old has their own theories for how Sir Topham Hatt should be represented, but if there's one thing that every fan remembers about Sir Topham Hatt, it's that he just can't seem to hold onto his hat whenever it's really windy on Sodor rather it be from the engines racing through the stations or along the tracks when they are meant to travel at safe speeds to Harold The Helicopter's rotor blades blowing his hat off and getting eaten by a goat at the Best Dressed Station award ceremony in Season 5's 'Baa' or just simply from a day of windy weather itself and we have already had two episodes from the original series based on that very concept-those two being Season 10's 'Topped Off Thomas' and Season 16's 'Emily's Winter Party Special'.

So as you can imagine, it was only a matter of time before we would eventually get to an episode where the engines are searching for Sir Topham Hatt's hat after it blows away in the wind before making an important announcement.  Was this episode the perfect fit just like a brand new top hat, the answer to that is...this was honestly no different to what we've already seen before from the original series.  While it was awesome to hear Sir Topham Hatt say that his original top hat has been worn by every rail controller for the last seventy-five years since it might have been a reference to the seventy-fifth anniversary of The Railway Series back in 2020 which would've been around the same time that this episode was written, there's really nothing special about 'Sir Topham Hatt's Hat' other than it just doing the same old shtick that we've seen before when it comes to our railway controller or at least we all hope that he still controls the railway considering how Gordon's the one that gives everyone their jobs in this reboot thus I'm giving 'Sir Topham Hatt's Hat' an average rating of a 2.5/5.
