ThomasNATION Classic Reviews - Henry's Hero
August 02, 2025
Y'know who I'm not too fond of in the CGI era? Henry. I’ve gone over this already in my Henry’s Magic Box review, so if you want more details, I’ll leave it linked below, but for someone who went from a headstrong and arrogant guy with an aura of relatability about him to a cowardly dunce is mind boggling. But I’ve seen a lot of people praise Henry’s Hero as one of the outliers of this era of Henry next to Henry Gets the Express. So I’m here to ask the question: is it? Let’s begin.
Henry and Hiro inadvertently take on some bad coal, which really mucks up their delivery, so they have to figure out how to push forward through the pain.
Throughout the episode, you’ll hear the phrase “keep on puffing” being repeated, and that’s a perfect way to sum up this episode’s moral. It’s a great way of teaching the kids to keep fighting through the pain when times get tough. Not to mention how this, I think, is the one time I think the worrier side of Henry works. Not only is the fear justified here (compare that to being scared of a snowman), but it results in a fantastic payoff with Henry pushing Hiro up the hill and doing most of the work himself despite his condition. This is not only a great ending, but something I do kinda wish the CGI era did more with him.
…oh yeah, this is also the episode where Duck comes back. And despite the hype this episode garnered for that reason alone, he’s mostly there to explain the situation with the bad coal. In fact, he isn’t even on screen for twenty seconds. This would be a problem, but…I mean, the episode isn’t about him, it’s about Henry and Hiro, so why would it be? But I also love how casual Duck’s return is. It’s not a big reintroduction, it’s just “hey. Duck’s back. No biggie.” That’s just hilarious.
Overall, Henry’s Hero is a great episode. With its great moral, solid usage of Henry and sensational climax, it makes for a really enjoyable watch. If you’re a fan of Henry, then this is an absolute must watch, even if you’re like me and you don’t like how he was portrayed in CGI. But with that, this episode gets a 4.5/5. And always remember this episode’s sage wisdom: looks like you two got some of the bad coal that arrived today…wait, what?
