It was a cloudy morning at Brendam Docks. Cranky, Carly and Big Mickey were busy as ever, loading and lifting, lifting and loading.
"Another boring day on the horizon..." sighed Cranky.
"Oh, lighten up, chuck!" laughed Carly. "I'm sure something interesting's bound to arrive."
"At this hour, Carly?" grumbled Cranky. "What could possibly arrive that could be so-"
Then, something heavy snagged onto Cranky's hook. "What in the world?!"
"Cranky, are you okay?" asked Carly.
Cranky heaved with all his might and lifted the heavy object to his eyes to reveal... "Gator?!"
Yes, it was Gator, Percy's old friend from Colombia. "Hello, Cranky! Been a while, hasn't it?"
"Is that who I think it is?" asked Salty from below. "It is! Ahoy there, Gator!"
"Hey, Salty!" chuckled Gator as Cranky lowered him onto the rails. "How long's it been? I haven't seen you in a little over ten years!"
"Far too long, matey!" chortled Salty. "What brings ye back to Sodor?"
"Well, I didn't have a whole lot of work to do back home," Gator explained, "so I figured it's been a while, I may as well pay you lot a visit! And I have to say, this place looks...a bit different."
"That'd be me!" laughed Carly. "We haven't met. I'm Carly!"
"Pleased to meet you, Carly!" called Gator. "Now, I should probably go and find Percy."
"I think he's still at Tidmouth Sheds," guessed Porter. "It's still really early. He may not even be awake."

Gator wasted no time in heading to Tidmouth Sheds. On the way over, he noticed a few changes around the railway. New stations. Unfamiliar engines. One thing was for sure: Sodor has had a serious makeover. But when he got to Tidmouth Sheds, he didn't care. He just wanted to see his old friend again. Percy was still asleep by the time Gator got there.
"Wake up, everyone!" chuckled Gator as he blew his whistle.
Percy woke up with a shock. "Wha...what's going on?"
        "Hello!"
"Gator?!" gasped Percy. "Hi! What are you doing here?"
"Figured I'd pop by for a visit. See you've got some new roommates."
Nia and Rebecca smiled at Gator. "You've missed a lot." laughed Thomas. "These are Nia and Rebecca. They're living with us after Edward and Henry moved out."
    "Aw, they moved? How come?"
"Edward moved out to be closer to his branchline."
    "And Henry?"
        "...I dunno."
As the engines left the sheds to get to work, Percy stayed behind to see Gator. "It's so good to have you back here!"
"Thanks, Percy, it's good to see you again, it really is." Gator smiled. "...railway's a touch different from how I remember it though."
"Yeah, but whaddya expect after over ten years?" Percy laughed. "It's still the same old railway. In fact, do you wanna join me on my job today? I've got a delivery to make up to Arlesburgh."
"Oh, absolutely!" Gator perked up. "Lead the way!"

In spite of what Percy said, it didn't feel like the same old railway to Gator. At every turn, he witnessed something strange that wasn't there before. Granted, Gator was never adverse to anything new, but with all these changes, it was almost like he was on a whole new railway.
"You alright, Gator?" asked Percy, noticing how confused Gator was.
"Yeah, I'm alright, Percy." smiled Gator. "Just getting used to all the changes to the railway."
"I hear that," chuckled Percy. "It took me a while to get used to some of the new bits around here. Like, did you know at one point Sodor had a walking bridge?"
"A what?!" gasped Gator. "How's that even possible?"
"An inventor moved to Sodor a few years ago named Ruth." Percy explained. "It's a long story."
"Okay, while that does sound very unusual, this place is still the same old Sodor." Gator thought to himself. "I still know my way around."
Percy and Gator then proceeded to take a turn up to Harwick, right by Arlesburgh West. "Okay, I can't say I remember this place..."
"Who's your friend there, Percy?" asked Rex.
"Hello there!" chuckled Gator. "Call me Gator!"
"Funny, you don't look like a reptile." joked Rex.
"Wow, you're really getting on with the miniature engines." gasped Percy.
"We've got a massive miniature railway up in Bucaramanga." explained Gator. "They're very nice fellows."
Soon, Percy dropped off his load and was ready to head on back to Knapford...until...
"Oh, Percy, just a heads up," called out Rex, "I think the track heading to the main line is blocked, Philip's just derailed."
"What?" asked Gator. "But we just came that way."
"It's kind of a new derailment. Your best bet is taking the walking bridge."

Percy and Gator soon found themselves cutting through Toby's branch line to get to the Walking Bridge. When they got to it, Gator was more than confused.
"What?" he pondered. "Where's the rest of it?"
"It's not called the Walking Bridge for no reason, y'know." explained Ruth, who was commandeering the bridge for the day. "Just roll on and the bridge will do the rest."
Gator looked at Percy. He didn't want to admit it, but he was nervous. "After you."
Percy gulped. "Y'know, I've...never actually been on this bridge before. You sure you don't wanna go first?"
Gator thought for a second, but the truth was, he was scared too. "...no. No, I can't."
"Me neither!" whimpered Percy. "What if I fall off?!"
"It's all too strange!" cried Gator. "I'm starting to think...um..."
    "What?"
Gator didn't want to say it, but he knew he had to. "I'm starting to think you may be wrong. Maybe this isn't the same old railway."
"I know that feeling better than anyone." Ruth sympathised with Gator. "Change can be a scary thing. I had to make the biggest change of my life when I moved here."
"I know, but what if you went back to America for a day and everything there was different to the point where you barely recognise it?"
"Well, like I said, change can be scary. It can be hard to swallow, even. But at the same time, it's a natural part of life. It may take time getting used to, but I assure you, deep down it's still the same old railway."
Then, an idea came to Percy. "Tell ya what, Gator. Why don't we go on the bridge together?"
    "Yeah, good idea." Gator smiled.
The two then rolled onto the Walking Bridge as Ruth commandeered it to the other side. It was still a little intimidating, Percy even had his eyes closed the whole time. But alas, the two made it across.
"Wow...that was actually rather smooth." Gator gasped. "You ready to go, Percy?"
Percy was still quivering, his eyes still shut. "Yeah, just give me a second..."
And as the two went on their work, Gator soon got used to all the changes to the railway and wasn't so intimidated by everything, and even when he encountered something new he didn't understand, he never forgot Ruth's advice. And, soon enough, it did start to feel like the same old railway again.

Hey, remember the episode Thomas' Day Off? Not the Season 9 episode that introduced Dennis, but the All Engines Go! episode that reintroduced Bulstrode. I've gone on record saying that episode was actually pretty solid. The story was adorable, the song was nice, and it was overall a decent watch. But there's one element they brought in that hasn't gotten much attention, and that's Thomas' little boxcar friend Boxy. He didn't get much attention in the episode besides being Thomas' companion, but that's why we have this episode. Will this make me see this inanimate boxcar in a new light? I'm aware that's one of the stranger questions I've asked on this blog, but let's begin.
Boxy begins to start showing his age when he falls apart on a journey, so Thomas takes a page out of Whiff's book and decides to find the parts to fix him himself.
One of the biggest positives I named in Thomas' Day Off was its childlike innocence. While I said the whole "making stuff up" angle didn't work in something like Dragon Run, it worked in Thomas' Day Off because of how it genuinely felt like a kid going on an adventure in his head. So, now that we return to the Boxy dynamic, does the same apply here? No, but that's not a detriment. Instead, the episode has a plot similar to that of School of Duck - it even has a similar message about repairing and recycling. As a result, this does end up with the episode feeling like a copy at times, just swap Duck and Dexter with Thomas and Boxy.
However, despite its derivative plot, this episode does have some things going for it. Just like in Thomas' Day Off, the bond between Thomas and Boxy is really sweet. You can tell how much Thomas cares about this inanimate little boxcar in spite of this being handled better in a later episode. Also, I actually really like the song. The aptly titled "Good as New" is very catchy and despite not having the most imaginative lyrics, it does compliment the message decently.
Overall, Good as New should more so be called...Decent as New. While the story isn't anything that hasn't been tackled in School of Duck, the heart is what elevates it to being an okay watch. If you want my recommendation, I'd say to watch it if you're curious, but if not...I mean, School of Duck is right there. Overall, however, I think Good as New is an alright time, so it earns a 3.5/5.

    Final Rating: 3.5/5

Y'know who I'm not too fond of in the CGI era? Henry. I’ve gone over this already in my Henry’s Magic Box review, so if you want more details, I’ll leave it linked below, but for someone who went from a headstrong and arrogant guy with an aura of relatability about him to a cowardly dunce is mind boggling. But I’ve seen a lot of people praise Henry’s Hero as one of the outliers of this era of Henry next to Henry Gets the Express. So I’m here to ask the question: is it? Let’s begin.
Henry and Hiro inadvertently take on some bad coal, which really mucks up their delivery, so they have to figure out how to push forward through the pain.
Throughout the episode, you’ll hear the phrase “keep on puffing” being repeated, and that’s a perfect way to sum up this episode’s moral. It’s a great way of teaching the kids to keep fighting through the pain when times get tough. Not to mention how this, I think, is the one time I think the worrier side of Henry works. Not only is the fear justified here (compare that to being scared of a snowman), but it results in a fantastic payoff with Henry pushing Hiro up the hill and doing most of the work himself despite his condition. This is not only a great ending, but something I do kinda wish the CGI era did more with him.
…oh yeah, this is also the episode where Duck comes back. And despite the hype this episode garnered for that reason alone, he’s mostly there to explain the situation with the bad coal. In fact, he isn’t even on screen for twenty seconds. This would be a problem, but…I mean, the episode isn’t about him, it’s about Henry and Hiro, so why would it be? But I also love how casual Duck’s return is. It’s not a big reintroduction, it’s just “hey. Duck’s back. No biggie.” That’s just hilarious.
Overall, Henry’s Hero is a great episode. With its great moral, solid usage of Henry and sensational climax, it makes for a really enjoyable watch. If you’re a fan of Henry, then this is an absolute must watch, even if you’re like me and you don’t like how he was portrayed in CGI. But with that, this episode gets a 4.5/5. And always remember this episode’s sage wisdom: looks like you two got some of the bad coal that arrived today…wait, what?

    Final Rating: 4.5/5

One day, Thomas had been sent to help out on the Chinese railway. He always loved helping his friends over there, be it delivering a water wheel or learning about tai chi, but he hasn't explored much of the country. So while he was working around the cherry blossom fields or the mountains, he always wanted to see more. As a result, the sights he's seen around China started to get old. But that all changed one morning when he saw the railway controller at the Town Square in Shanghai.
"Uh, Mr. Controller, sir?" asked Thomas. "I don't suppose you need someone to take anything up to Beijing, do you? Or Hangzhou?"
The railway controller thought for a second. "Well, I need someone to take a group of doctors up to Beijing West."
        "I could do that!"
"I was going to ask one of the bullets, but I suppose I could shift some things around."
Thomas was overjoyed. "Oh, thank you, sir! I promise you won't be disappointed!" But one thing the controller brought up stuck out to him. "Wait, bullets?"
The controller was too far away to hear him now. That's when Yong Bao approached him.
"Ah, ni hao, Thomas!" said Yong Bao. "Lovely day, isn't it?"
"Yong Bao, what did the controller mean by bullet?" asked Thomas.
"That depends, what did he mean?"
"He had a job for a bullet that involved doctors, what's he planning to do?"
"Oh, he means the bullet trains. We have lots of bullet trains in China."
"Is that a kind of train that gets shot onto the rails?"
Yong Bao burst out laughing. "天哪,äø! It just means these engines are really fast. Some of the fastest engines in the world!"
"Wow." Thomas gasped in awe. "And the inspector just gave me their job. That's amazing!"

Thomas wasted no time in picking the doctors up in An An and Yin-Long, and soon he was en route to Beijing West. He couldn't wait to see the big city...but remember when I said he had never been to Beijing before? Well...
"Are you sure this is the right way?" asked Yin-Long.
"Honestly...no." replied Thomas. "I should've asked Yong Bao for directions, I know he delivers things to this station all the time."
It wasn't long before he came across a junction. One way led to a line down the mountains, the other led to a depot. An idea flew into his funnel.
"Wait a minute..." pondered Thomas. "Maybe I can ask for directions at that depot!"
"Ooh, I'm not so sure," said An An. "That's the Wuhan bullet train depot. They only know the electric lines."
"We don't have any other option, An An." replied Thomas. "Trust me, we'll be in and out."
So Thomas took An An and Yin-Long down to the depot. The engines didn't look like any other engine he'd ever seen before. They were all so sleek and shiny.
"Cinders and ashes..." gasped Thomas. "I feel like we've just entered another planet."
"That's the bullet train system for you." Yin Long explained. "All these engines are revolutionary."
"You mean like my friend Kenji?"
"I don't know who that is, but possibly. Now, let's get some directions."
Thomas looked around until he saw a large silver bullet train at a station. "Uh, ni hao."
    "噢,你儽!" said the engine. "ęˆ‘čæ™é™„čæ‘ä»Žę„ę²”č§čæ‡å¦å…‹å‘åŠØęœŗ。ä½ č¦åŽ»å“Ŗå„æ?"
    "...uh...come again?"
"Oh, wait, let me." said An An. "å¾ˆęŠ±ę‰ęˆ‘ēš„ęœ‹å‹,ä»–äøę˜Æ当地äŗŗ,äøę–‡čÆ“å¾—äøå¤Ŗ儽。"
"Oh. Forgive me, friend." laughed the bullet train. "I was saying we don't get many tank engines around here. Where are you headed?"
    "Beijing West."
"Oh, I'm headed there right now! You can follow me!"
Thomas sighed in relief. "Thank you so much, you really saved my bunker."
"Not a problem!" said the bullet train. "My name's Chen, by the way."
"I'm Thomas." he replied as the two of them headed off.

Thomas and Chen were headed down the line headed to Beijing. Thomas was headed down tracks he had never seen before, so Chen had to slow down a ton so he could keep up. And the views were beautiful!
"Wow!" gasped Thomas in awe. "You pass all this every day?"
"Yeah, but I always go so fast," Chen thought, "all I see is a blur. I've never even gone this speed before."
"You've never slowed down to see all this?" asked Thomas.
"I can go up to 350 kilometers an hour, Thomas. I don't need to slow down."
"Well, first time for everything, eh?" laughed An An.
"Actually, can I just ask," asked Yin-Long, "where are we right now?"
Chen looked around a touch. "Are we not in Beijing?"
"No, we would've passed Tiananmen Square by now. It looks more like Xi'an."
The four of them looked around for a bit. Thomas noticed a giant bell tower in the plaza. "Does Xi'an have a massive bell tower?"
"It does!" gasped Yin-Long. "It does, this is Xi'an!"
"Chen, what happened?" asked An An.
"...oh, now I think I know what happened!" chortled Chen. "I think I made a wrong turn. Sorry, I'm always getting lost."
    Thomas gasped. "Always...getting...lost?"
"Yeah, I think that's why I don't get many passengers. My sense of direction is horrible. Come on, let's head back."
The four of them backed up to see where they went wrong.
"Thomas, what were you thinking?" asked An An.
        "I didn't know!" protested Thomas.

Trying to find Beijing was a major hassle. Left and right, Thomas and Chen were making little progress. But soon enough, it looked like they were approaching Beijing! They were passing Tiananmen Square, clear as day.
"Ha! This is it!" laughed Chen. "We're in Beijing!"
    "We're finally here!" cheered Thomas.
Then there was trouble. Thomas' pistons started sputtering as he came to a halt. "Oh, no, no, no!"
"Thomas? What's the matter?" asked Chen.
"I'm out of coal." sighed Thomas.
"No problem, we can find a coal hopper."
"This is an electric line." An An recalled. "There are no coal hoppers. Now we're never gonna get to the station."
Chen sighed. "I'm sorry, Thomas. This is all my fault. We wouldn't have gotten lost if not for me."
"It's not your fault, Chen." Thomas tried to assure his friend.
"It is." weeped Chen. "Oh, why is my sense of direction so awful?!"
Neither of them knew what to do. They just sat there in silence...until an idea came to Chen.
"Wait..." Chen thought. "Thomas, how good are you with high speeds?"
    "Not great." chuckled Thomas.
"No matter. Hold on!" Chen said before he switched tracks behind Thomas and started pushing him, An An and Yin-Long to the station.
"CHEN!" screamed Thomas. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
"I'm getting you to the station!"
Chen kept pushing Thomas at full speeds. But once they reached Beijing West, once Chen slowed down, Thomas kept going. He kept speeding down the line, straight towards Hong-Mei.
    "Hong-Mei!" Thomas cried. "Look out!"
Hong-Mei backed up, not to get away from Thomas, but to slow him down. With a mighty biff, Hong-Mei was able to slow Thomas down.
    "Thomas!" cried Chen. "You okay?"
"Never do that again!" panted Thomas.

At last, Thomas was able to deliver the doctors to the station. He was an hour late, but he was able to get the job done.
"At last!" Thomas sighed. "What a rush."
"Never again." laughed An An and Yin-Long.
"At least the worst is over," chuckled Chen. "And I'm sorry again I got you so lost."
"Ah, it's fine." smiled Thomas. "Truth be told, it's not the worst time I've been lost."
        "It's not?"
"Word of advice, if you're ever getting on a ship, don't opt for the little raft attached to the back end."
        "That's happened to you?"
"Yeah. If you want, I can tell you all about it on the way home."
Chen agreed and he and Thomas headed back to Shanghai. As the two laughed and told each other stories, Thomas didn't really mind getting lost. And hey, he got to see more of the sights of China!
