PA Problems: ThomasNATION Review

As the second week of Season 21 begins in Channel 5's UK slot, we see an exciting, different episode, starring Edward, Reg and The Fat Controller... This one's called "PA Problems." A lot of comedy, with a potentially good story - but does the episode meet the standards of the previous Season 21 episodes or is it a let down?

Hey everybody, it's JF the Lolzor again. We're now entering the second week of Season 21, which has proven to be a massive wild card. And as we enter the second half, will it hold up as well as the first? Let's find out.
So, PA Problems sounds relatively simple on paper. It's just an episode about PA systems. But when you put it in practise, there's more to it. So here's the thing: Sir Topham Hatt gets a new, state of the art PA systems, while the old one is given to Reg. The new PA system sounds like it could be a brilliant addition to the station, but in actuality, it is just awful. Tourists wind up at the quarry, workmen wind up at the beach, pigs wind up at Callan Castle, the list goes on. Everything goes wrong immediately and it's up to Edward to try and sort things out.
What I particularly like about the episode is that the humor is absolutely top notch, case in point Reg. He always appears to be bobbing about like the characters in Journey Beyond Sodor, but here, they make it simulate that Reg is having a little dance party. What's also funny is that they even remember to include the reactions of the workmen at the scrapyard, showing that they're constantly annoyed by Reg's singing, to the point where one guy had to strap the lids of trash cans onto his head and use them as earmuffs, which is absolutely hilarious. The comedy of the series can be at the top of its game at times, and nowhere is it more spotlighted than in here.
If there is one spot of criticism I have to give the episode, it's that it often times moves a bit too quickly, making it a little bit harder to focus on the events. That, and the story itself is easily predictable. You can tell how the episode ends in the first minute of the episode. It's not a problem, per se, because it makes up for the weak story by supplying some great laughs. While I applaud the humor and clever jokes of the episode, the basic outline of the story is pretty darn weak.
I won't say this is the best episode from Thomas, or even the best of the season, but I will give it that it's the funniest episode of Season 21. Sure, the story is weak and moves a bit too quick, but thanks to it's brilliant comedy, it becomes worth a watch, which is why I give it a 3.5/5. With a bundle of new characters, a new and improved Rosie, and the return of Terence, here's to the rest of Season 21 and the other surprises it'll bring.
