Hey all, JF here. So, Season 24 is officially upon us. And so far, it has been a bit of a wild card. We’ve had great episodes, and some that are not too good. But today, we turn our focus to a certain episode that has a lot of Thomas fans talking: Emily to the Rescue. So what does this story have in store for us? Let’s begin.
A railway inspector is coming to the island to check on the safety of the engines, and Sir Topham Hatt organises an emergency drill and calls for the engine closest to the Search and Rescue Centre to find Rocky. However, at the time of the emergency drill, a mix-up leaves James, Percy, and Rebecca off the rails, and it’s up to Emily to come to their rescue.
To put it short, this episode was fine…just fine. There’s not much to discuss with the episode, it’s just alright.
One thing I do have to find well-executed is the crash. The crash presented isn’t too silly or over-the-top like most crashes are in the recent era. What I also like is the attention to detail with little chunks of coal flying out. Another thing that works about the episode is that there’s no fantasy sequence, which is a major relief seeing as the fantasies barely did anything to impact the story at all, and only serve to fill out the runtime when an episode runs short.
Another noteworthy thing about this is that this is the episode where Emily finally gets a number. And I gotta say, that’s actually a pretty decent idea. I also like the idea of Emily being the island’s official safety engine, as it gives her a good purpose to be among the main cast. In fact, I really like Emily’s portrayal here. She’s presented as compassionate and caring towards her friends, but knowing to be mature by not making a fuss when Percy goes to fetch Rocky…other than noting that he’s going the wrong way, which is entirely justifiable.
Other than that, there isn’t a whole lot to say, it's just a perfectly okay episode. It’s not all that memorable, but the crash was neat, Emily’s portrayal was pretty good, and it was fun seeing a really obscure character such as Albert make an appearance. I’d recommend checking it out, and with that, I’d give it a 3.5/5. It’s nothing to write home about, but at least it was watchable compared to a certain other Season 23 episode, which, trust me, we’ll get to eventually.
