ThomasNATION Classic Reviews - Stepney Gets Lost

October 23, 2021

Hey all, JF here, and with today's episode, we've got a little bit of a classic.

Of course, one of the most enjoyable new characters in the model series was good ol' Stepney. After a prominent role in Season 4, he quickly became a fan-favorite to the point of several anticipating his return. While that unfortunately didn't happen, he's still remembered for such classic episodes like today's subject. But as Stepney gets lost in the depths of Hell, will the story be a shining reminder of his legacy, or should this episode get lost with him? Let's begin.
Stepney is tasked with taking a freight train to a new branchline, but among some thick fog, he loses his way and winds up stuck in the Ironworks, where two diesels, 'Arry and Bert, plan to make him into scrap metal, meaning Stepney has to escape their clutches.

Going off the theme of this Halloween, you'll notice that this episode's pretty different. This is a Halloween classic review without a ghost train. While it's weird of us to be breaking tradition like this, that doesn't mean the episode's without a spooky atmosphere, especially when we get to the Ironworks, that almost looks like a haunted house through its use of lighting and effects that'll get the viewer a little scared along with Stepney.
But if I had to name the best part of the episode, it would honestly be the villains. Both 'Arry and Bert are surprisingly threatening, where they make it clear that Stepney has no way to escape. If I had to name one issue with them, it's that with how short the episode is, they don't get a lot of screen-time. They appear, take Stepney into the smelting shed, and they disappear, making his escape and the conclusion a little bit rushed.
But once again, this episode proves that you don't always need ghosts and haunted locales to make a creepy episode. As it makes up for its abrupt ending with its spooky atmosphere and threatening villains, it's a must-watch around the Halloween season - or if you're just a Stepney fan. And with that, it earns itself a 4/5. Bluebells forever!
