ThomasNATION Reviews - The Paint Problem

August 19, 2023

If you were to ask any longtime fan of Thomas the Tank Engine what their thoughts were on the Brenaissance period of the original television series as a whole, they would more often than not tell you that the 2015 full-length special 'The Adventure Begins' is not only one of the greatest movies from this era but also one of the best movies of the whole franchise. In this origin story movie, Thomas arrives on Sodor wearing a green paint job with white lining and LBSC painted on his side tanks however the paint job isn't a real one since the London, Brighton And South Coast Railway never painted their engines green with white lining since the paint job has more in common with the later Southern Railway livery whereas the LBSC's main livery was a very attractive umber brown with gold lining around the time when Thomas was built. However, this occurred in 1914 since Thomas is one of the later E2s with the extended side tanks built in 1915 thus he never would have worn brown and indeed would have worn the very basic LBSC black. While not the most exciting livery in the world and he would have only had it for a very short time as he went to Sodor the same year he was built, I think most of us agree though that nothing beats the classic blue that he received and has maintained ever since then.

But speaking of the many different liveries that Thomas may or may not have worn throughout his days on the railway, that makes a perfect segue into our next episode which is about Thomas learning to be patient as he waits for his paint to dry even though he feels like he's missing out...and if you couldn't figure out my main problem with this story just from that brief little synopsis alone, then I think y'all are rusting in the rain! I understand it gets annoying every time I compare the reboot to the original series since this reboot is a new canon that is separate from the original show's canon, but it's gotta be changes that make sense!

From everything I remember when it comes to the original Thomas & Friends, not once did Thomas ever have a problem with patience when it comes to being repainted since the only times he was ever impatient were when he was trying so hard to please Sir Topham Hatt that he rushed off and did things without thinking like when he left his guard behind in Season 1's 'Thomas And The Guard'. On top of that, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the process of repainting an engine go from scraping off the old coat first before applying a pink undercoat to keep the water out and then applying the new coat of paint?

Granted I can see some similarities to Season 20's 'All In Vain' when James let one tiny scratch mess up his plan for being repainted, but I remember so much about that episode than I think I ever will about 'The Paint Problem' which is nothing more than a rinse-and-repeat experience to the point where you're just waiting for Thomas to finally learn his lesson and that is why I unfortunately have to give 'The Paint Problem' a rating of a 2.5/5.

Final Rating: 2.5/5
