ThomasNATION Reviews - Hide and Surprise!

February 17, 2024

I went on about this extensively in my "A Rusty Rescue" review, but when he was first introduced in Season 2's 'Pop Goes the Diesel', Diesel was very devious and maniacal, the type of guy that would flip any situation in his favor and win it if he put his mind to it.  But as the show went on, he just turned into a brute reduced to nothing but a selfish bully who picks on others just for the sake of it. So as you can imagine, a lot of fans, including myself, took issue with the fact that Diesel, the series' villain, would be shown as one of Thomas' closest buddies. But with this in mind as we continue this trilogy of Diesel-centered episodes, it shouldn't really come as a surprise to any fan of Thomas young or old that 'Hide and Surprise' is nothing more than just an elongated version of the short 'Surprise!' which was released around the end of last year. Heck, that's what this whole episode is based off - Diesel's full of surprises, after all.
My problems with 'Hide and Surprise' are honestly no different to many fans' thoughts on the episodes from the Hit Era of the original series since they had become intentionally dumber and drawn out than the Classic Series with characters becoming much more childlike and the writing got lazier with the 'three strikes, you're out' formula also coming into prominence in this era.
Much like with the episodes from the HiT Era, so little happens in 'Hide and Surprise' since less world building and plot occurs in this episode than in a Classic Series one as it's basically taking less plot than before and just stretching it out and that alone is more than enough for me to give 'Hide and Surprise' a rating of a 2.5/5.
