ThomasNATION Classic Reviews - Jumping Jobi Wood

March 23, 2024

There are a lot of things that are inconsistent in the seasons that make up the CGI Series of "Thomas & Friends'', but one of the most inconsistent things is Thomas the Tank Engine himself. The CGI Series tended to want its cake and eat it too with him. Sometimes, Thomas would be his cheeky as well as pricky and egotistical self he was in the early books and episodes. But then, sometimes they want him to be the voice of reason and be mature. He tends to fluctuate, depending whatever the needs of a particular episode are and it leaves me wondering ultimately what type of character Thomas is supposed to be in the CGI Series. It doesn't help either when the writing which had already gotten lazier in the HIT Era as the "three strikes, you're out" formula came into prominence only got worse when the show went fully CG-animated and even less of a sh...er, dookie, was given where the characters were made even more stupid and even more wimpy and they had become complete and utter idiots to the point where I have to wonder if Sir Topham Hatt himself is ashamed to even still be breathing. It had gotten so bad, it had reached a point where even the most die-hard of Thomas fans couldn't get through an episode before turning it off. Things really were dour in Thomas' history, and after we had gotten the bottom of the barrel when it came to specials as a way of celebrating the sixty-fifth anniversary of the franchise with "Misty Island Rescue", it was only about to get worse when Misty Island became more prominent in the series. What else can you say at a time like this other than..."Jumping Jobi Wood"! Let's...just get this over with.

JUMPING JOBI WOOD: Thomas is ordered to collect some precious Jobi wood from Misty Island, but chaos ensues when Old Wheezy starts throwing the logs around.

In the words of Dash, to describe "Jumping Jobi Wood", this episode is "just plain crazy". Despite that I like the Logging Locos even if it's just purely for aesthetics, I don't like Misty Island at all. I mean, look at it! It's a death trap for the engines and people rather it was logs being thrown around everywhere, a shaking bridge that somehow doesn't even break and two poorly maintained cranes just buzzing about while acting like junk. If there was going to be yet another episode of Misty Island, my suggestion would've been to clean it up and make it new again instead of leaving it a mess for the merchandising range.
Oh, and speaking of being a mess for the franchise, don’t get me started on Edward and Thomas. What in the good name of Awdry has happened to you both?! Edward is the usual wimp on Sir Topham Hatt's "new" and "improved" railway and Thomas is yet again the idiotic "engine of the day" for thinking that he knows everything ranging from magnets to a death trap island of misfit engines. But with that said and despite the flaws, as well as my extreme dislike of Ferdinand, the "that's right, boss" scene was a little funny.
But one scene will never be enough to save this episode by its writing which again is just crazy as well as weird and not a firm favourite. Although I do have to say the title is catchy, that doesn't matter and that is why I am giving "Jumping Jobi Wood" a rating of 0.5/5. As Ferdinand said it best in another episode, this is not right.
