ThomasNATION Reviews - A New View for Thomas

June 08, 2024

Out of all the characters in All Engines Go!, Harold is the only one where I had to ask myself "my god, what did they do to you?". Despite his personality being okay, I never got used to his grey, not-meshed-into-his-front face. It looks a little jarring and it doesn't really make sense. In spite of this, this does lead us to "A New View for Thomas", which I will admit sounds like a good premise. But does it live up to the expectations? Let's begin.
Harold's rotor breaks down, meaning Thomas has to take him to get fixed up. On his way, Thomas teaches his helicomrade about the wonders of being an engine and enjoying life down below.
At first glance, this episode seems to be a copy of "The Thomas Way", since the two have very similar plotlines just without Duck. Now, at first you would think this would make the episode predictable and unoriginal. But in actuality, it's the friendship between Thomas and Harold that holds it up. I like seeing the two interact and teach each other about their lifestyles, plus they play really well off each other.
However, the overall story of the episode is a little underwhelming. Going in, I assumed it would be about Harold taking Thomas on a trip through the skies. But in actuality, that only happens at the end. And while it is a nice scene, it would've been cooler if this were the whole episode. Perhaps Thomas gets jealous of Harold's high life so Harold takes him flying, something happens and Thomas realises that his life is perfect on the rails. I'd also bring up the inaccuracy of Harold's rear rotor propelling him forward, but it's All Engines Go. Realism was thrown out the window when the engines started using their wheels as hands.
But overall, A New View for Thomas is a fine one. The story's pretty disappointing and not all that original, but the friendship between Thomas and Harold is nice enough to make it...watchable. It's an episode I recommend if you get bored and there's nothing else to watch, but outside of that there's not much to get out of it, and as a result, it gets a 3/5.
