Percy & The Magic Carpet: Review / Analysis (by JFtheLOLZOR)
April 29, 2017
We're back for this week's post! The sun's shining (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) and its time for summer! Long sunny days await... But Thomas is not going to return any time soon! With quite a haul of Season 20 still to air in the US and UK, we're expecting Season 21 in July or August... And the special, "Journey Beyond Sodor" has been pushed back, as well! While previous specials were generally released in June-July in UK cinemas, Journey will only be making its UK cinema debut on August 25th - which might mean pushed back Digital download dates as well.
...But, we got you! While Thomas' on a break, ThomasNATION will be posting weekly posts - random topics, everything Thomas! So be sure to keep checking and follow our Twitter - @TheThomasNATION (click here) to stay updated!
Today, Jack Frefigs (JFtheLOLZOR) writes a small review / analysis on the Season 8 episode, "Percy & The Magic Carpet." Read it to know what he thinks about the episode... Do you agree, or do you not?
Hey folks! Jack back at it again with the review. This time; instead of a new episode or a movie, we're reviewing an older episode. Let's go!
Back before the CGI shift was made, Thomas and Friends relied on little model trains (Yes, we know you know this. I liked the sentence, so?!). This era was praised from Seasons 1 to 7. What did it become before Brenner - the time between Season 7 to Season 17?
Well, nothing more than the entire embarrassment of a well renowned childhood icon with a smack in the face to realism, obnoxious dialogue and a narrator that would not close his mouth (well, at least in Miller's CGI era, and kind of in Seasons 8-12).
But with that said, there were a few good episodes here and there. However, with episodes like Thomas' Frosty Friend and Wonky Whistle, consider the good ones diamonds in the rough. Percy and the Magic Carpet, however... wasn't one of those diamonds, but more a lump of coal. Let's just get this over with.
It's a windy day on Sodor, a perfect climate for a flower show for some reason. To add to that, the opera singer of Sodor (she's so forgettable I even forgot her name) is going to open the show. Percy is sent to pick up a red carpet as, I can't believe I'm gonna say this, a special special, and Salty makes a suggestion that it's magic. And the rest of the episode is basically carpet-based antics. Which is quite... stupid, mostly.
The main problem with the episode is that the writing is horrendous. It basically just toys around with Percy's gullibility, Salty's stereotypical sailor-with-stories persona and a carpet. Not only that, everyone else in the story serve little to no purpose to the story.
The scenes with the "flying" carpet are easily predictable - they're so repetitive, it's like they just copy-pasted the script three times and changed two letters here and there. Yes. It's that bad.
James and Gordon's scene just add to their self-absorbed personalities, and Murdoch plays a sort of important part in the storyline, but he doesn't even speak, making him practically useless!
If it wasn't clear enough, I was not a fan of this episode. It's far too over the top, full of generic one liners, and gives logic a backhand.
It's plainly just childish. And not even a 3-year-old-show childish. It's just super crazy and stupid. I mean, hello! Engines work with steam, coal, water, and fire. How do they not understand the concept of flipping WIND?!
It easily gets a 2.5/5 - and that too, is generous. Just pray that I don't have to review an episode like this again, it just doesn't feel right to me.
Rating: 2.5 / 5
